“How do modern vehicles integrate their control systems with all of their components?”
Modern vehicles have a large amount of components which need to interact with one another. Using traditional end-to-end systems would be overly cumbersome, so engineers had to come up with a new system. This resulted in the development of the CAN Bus. CAN Buses are buses that electronic components can plug into. Because components can communicate across a single interface, CAN ends up being low-cost, centralized, resilient, efficient, and flexible. These factors led CAN buses to become the industry standard in controls.
