“Why does more equal voting representation lead to better climate adaptation solutions?”

Marginalized communities tend to live in places more impacted by climate change. If they don’t have sufficient voting representation, then it can be harder to fund and build projects/programs that could address these problems. But if they live in a more equal democracy, they can get their voices heard and implement solutions. This is Why More Equal Voting Representation Leads to Better Climate Adaptation Solutions.

“Why is the Netherlands especially vulnerable to sea-level rise?”

The Netherlands is a very particular country. Four Major European rivers drain out to the ocean in the country. Over centuries, the Dutch have also reclaimed land, sectioning off coastal areas with dikes and draining the water with windmills to form polders. 17% of the country’s land is polder territory! These factors have made the country’s land flat and 27% below sea level. This is Why the Netherlands is Especially Vulnerable to Sea-Level Rise.

“Why can skateboarding rinks be built in water squares?”

Skateboarding rinks provide great value for the community. People can come, gather, and involve themselves in an athletic activity. Their curved, static design also lend themselves well to being implementable in water squares. By combining them these urban areas can serve as public spaces during dry times and safety valves during downpours. This is Why Skateboarding Rinks Can Be Built in Water Squares.

“Why does green park space around a river act as a natural flood barrier?”

Green park spaces are wonderful spots to gather. There’s always something to do whether for children playing or a couple walking. But if we place this by a river, then the greenery will be able to absorb flood waters. This is Why Green Park Space Around a River Can Act as a Natural Flood Barrier. Landscape architects should look into how this can be applied into their own designs.

How Water Squares are Designed

“How are water squares designed?”

Water squares are marvelous pieces of urbanism. Their dual-use purpose allows them to function as flood mitigation and public space. But how are they designed? Well, first a low-lying area is set up to act as a bed. During dry seasons this usually has recreational functions such as a swimming pool or a basketball court. This bed is surrounded by slanted walls that keep water in during heavy rain storms. Connected to these walls will be an inlet to a drainage system to clear the water when the time is ready. This is How Water Squares are Designed.
