Climate Rezoning

“Why will we need to rezone parts of urban areas in light of climate change?”
Most cities in North America were zoned well before the impacts of climate change became apparent. As a result, there is development in areas that are now floodplains which used to not be. So how can we make sure that more people will not be put in harm’s way? Well, what if we were to rezone these areas for other purposes, such as disallowing residential, commercial, or industrial uses and designate it as a climate buffer spot? Such Climate Rezoning would allow us to ensure safety in our urban areas and force urban planners to think about which zones are needed to protect cities from climate disaster.
