Why Climate Adaptation Planners Should Assist Cities With Large Numbers of Displaced People
10/05/23
“Why should climate adaptation planners assist cities with large numbers of displaced people?”
Climate adaptation planners concentrate on making cities safer from global warming. Much of this involves working with people who have been displaced or are under the threat of displacement. One way to study pathways to become successful is to assist cities that currently hold large numbers of displaced people. This is Why Climate Adaptation Planners Should Assist Cities With Large Numbers of Displaced People.
“How can we map the locations of water reservoirs?”
Water reservoirs are an essential life source for people. As such, knowing their location is critically important. We can perform Water Reservoir Mapping in a variety of ways, from satellite images to GIS visualizations to hand drawing.
Climate sister city partnerships allow for a receiver community to facilitate migration with a sending community. But how can this be done? Well, by finding out what the community in migration in need overlaps with what a receiver community might need or handle we can form a productive team. I like to call this process Climate Sister City Matchmaking, and it’s bound to become more common in the future.
“How can we designate water-holding zones for floods?”
The advent of climate change is making floods worse and worse. Some areas are bound to be flooded periodically. While many efforts have gone into holding water back, what if we were to instead allow it to flow into certain areas? By creating Designated Water-Holding Zones for Floods we can save people from water damage without wasting too many resources.
Why Urban Planners Should Have a Good Understanding of Floodplains
09/29/23
“Why should urban planners have a good understanding of how floodplains work?”
Floodplains are flat pieces of land next to a stream or river that periodically flood. Oftentimes times portions of cities and towns are built right next to floodplains and experience regular inundation. As such, urban planners need to have solid knowledge of how to deal with such events. This is Why Urban Planners Should Have a Good Understanding of Floodplains.
Why Gall–Peters Projection Maps Visualize the Global South Better
09/25/23
“Why do Gall-Peters Projection Maps visualize the global south better?”
Standard Mercator projection maps undersize regions near the equator and oversize regions near the poles. This ends up privileging countries in the Global North by making them seem larger than in reality and countries in the Global South smaller. However, maps that use the Gall-Peters projection as their base preserve the area of projection, thereby displaying accurate sizes. This is Why Gall–Peters Projection Maps Visualize the Global South Better. By switching our maps to Gall-Peters projections, we can make visual representation of the word’s countries better.
Knowing watershed locations is a vital part of urban governance. With the advent of computational technology, it’s become even easier to do so. GIS allows people to upload topology maps and deduct watershed locations based on the results. This is why Using GIS to Visualize Watersheds is so useful.
Why Coloring Contour Lines by Elevation Makes Topographic Maps Much Easier to Read
09/23/23
“Why does coloring contour lines by elevation make topographic maps much easier to read?”
Contour lines let readers know where different elevations lie on a topographic map. However, they can be hard to distinguish, making them especially difficult to read in dense mountainous areas. But if we color them based on elevation, then it becomes much clearer where the different elevation features are on the map. This is Why Coloring Contour Lines by Elevation Makes Topographic Maps Much Easier to Read.
Why Teaching Design Skills is Fundamental to Planning Education
09/21/23
“Why is teaching design skills fundamental to planning education?”
Urban Planning is focused on the design and policy around land use, urban form, and human infrastructure. Much of this involves understanding and creating designs of plans to be implemented. If urban planning students are able to master design skills, then they’ll have a much better command over the field. This is Why Teaching Design Skills is Fundamental to Planning Education.
