“What causes soil to slide down a slope?”

Soil may rest on an inclined slope. This soil is balanced when the forces pushing the soil down (such as its weight) are counterbalanced by resistive forces (such as the soil shear strength). When the forces pulling down overpower the resistive forces, the soil will slide down in what’s called a Soil Slope Failure. Many factors can cause a soil slope failure, from rainwater weakening the effective stress of a soil to earthquakes to excessive weight over the soil to vegetation root loss. Landslides are an example of soil slope failure. People can prevent soil slope failure by implementing protective measures such as installing retaining walls, planting rooted vegetation, and covering soil during rainstorms. Soil slope failure is an important factor to look out for in development projects.
