Heatwaves can have great impacts on societies. However, their severity can vary greatly. Some only bring slightly warmer temperatures, while some shatter records like the one that (as of writing) recently happened in California. By using standard deviations from normal temperature, we can obtain a better estimate of how abnormal they are. This is why Analyzing Heatwaves Using Standard Deviations is so useful.
